JUST IN: SGF Summons Labour to Emergency Meeting Over Nationwide Strike
In a critical move to address the ongoing nationwide strike over the new national minimum wage, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has called an emergency meeting with organized labour. This urgent session aims to resolve the impasse that has brought economic activities to a standstill.
Comrade Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria, confirmed the development on Monday, June 3.
“We are heading there now,” Osifo told our correspondent, indicating that leaders from both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and TUC are on their way to the SGF’s office.
An insider attending the meeting hinted that its outcome would be pivotal in deciding whether the strike, which has significantly disrupted the nation’s economy, would be called off.
On Monday, the strike had far-reaching effects, halting operations in banks, schools, flights, and other key sectors. In a related move, labour leaders in Oyo State began enforcing the strike, even sending out health commissioner and permanent secretaries from their offices.
In addition to today’s emergency meeting, the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage has also summoned organized labour for further discussions on Tuesday.
