JUST IN: NAF Alpha Jet Crashes in Niger State
Two Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet pilots escaped unharmed on Saturday after ejecting from their aircraft during an in-flight emergency at the NAF Base in Kainji, Niger State.
According to a statement by NAF spokesperson Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the jet encountered a critical fault shortly after take-off during a post-inspection functional check flight. The pilots steered the aircraft away from residential areas before ejecting, a move credited with preventing potential civilian casualties.
Ejodame said both pilots are undergoing routine medical examinations at a NAF medical facility.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, commended the crew for the professionalism and calm judgement displayed during the emergency. He has also ordered the formation of a Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the incident.
Ejodame added that the Air Force remains committed to strict safety standards and to safeguarding both its personnel and the public.
