FG Declares Public Holiday to Honour Late Former President Muhammadu Buhari
The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Tuesday, July 15 as a public holiday to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued by the ministry and approved by President Bola Tinubu.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Tunji-Ojo said.
The holiday comes as part of the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Tinubu, during which national flags are to fly at half-mast across the country.
The late President is expected to be buried on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, after his remains are flown back to Nigeria.
The Federal Government urged citizens to honour the day by promoting peace, unity, and patriotism, echoing Buhari’s lifelong vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria.
“The Federal Government extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late President, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
