JUST IN: FCT High Court Fines FG ₦100 Million for Violating Emefiele’s Rights
The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja has ruled that the extended detention of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, without trial constitutes a blatant infringement of his fundamental rights.
The court imposed a hefty ₦100 million fine on both the Federal Government and the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Additionally, the ruling bars the FG and its agents from re-arresting or detaining Emefiele without a court order.
The judgment stems from a fundamental human rights suit initiated by the former CBN governor, challenging his prolonged custody under the Department of State Services. Emefiele sought ₦1 billion in damages and a restraining order against further arrests or detentions.
SK Blog reported that Emefiele was apprehended on June 10, shortly after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu. Defendants in the case included the Federal Government, the Attorney General of the Federation, the EFCC, and its chairman.
