JUST IN: Blackout Hits Lagos, Abuja as National Grid Suffers Another Collapse
Several parts of Nigeria, including Lagos and Abuja, were left without electricity on Wednesday after the national grid suffered a disturbance. The latest grid failure, which occurred around 11:30 a.m., marks the second collapse of the year, highlighting ongoing concerns over the country’s power infrastructure.
According to statements from Ikeja Electric and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), the outage resulted from a system disturbance at 11:34 a.m. AEDC confirmed the development, stating that efforts to restore power were already underway. “We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 a.m. today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas,” the company said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “While gradual restoration has commenced, we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized.”
A popular X account tracking the national grid also reported the incident, noting that parts of the country experienced an outage due to a “GRID DISTURBANCE” before noon.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has yet to disclose the cause of the collapse. When contacted, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah stated that she was in transit and would provide further details later.
This latest incident follows a previous grid collapse on January 11, 2025. The national grid has struggled with frequent disruptions, recording at least 12 collapses in 2024 alone. The recurring failures have raised concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity supply and the urgent need for infrastructure improvements.
