JUST IN: Abuja Court Bars VIO from Stopping, Impounding, or Fining Motorists
The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a decisive order preventing the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO) from stopping vehicles, impounding, confiscating, or imposing fines on motorists in the Federal Capital Territory.
The judgment, delivered by Justice Evelyn Maha, came in response to a lawsuit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1695/2023) filed by human rights advocate and public interest lawyer, Abubakar Marshal. The case challenged the legality of actions carried out by the VIO and its affiliates.
Justice Maha’s ruling emphasized that no existing law grants the respondents—the VIO Director of Road Transport, the Area Commander in Jabi, the Team Leader in Jabi, or the Minister of the FCT—the authority to stop, impound, or fine vehicles on the road.
The court also issued an order of perpetual injunction restraining the VIO and its agents from further infringing on the rights of Nigerians, including their right to freedom of movement, presumption of innocence, and property ownership.
