Isioma Nwosu Graduates as LASU’s Best with 4.93 CGPA in 2023/24 Academic Session
Isioma Sybil Nwosu, a student from the Department of Biochemistry, has been named the overall best-graduating student at Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session. The announcement was made by LASU’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, during a press briefing marking the commencement of the university’s 28th Convocation ceremony.
During the briefing, Prof. Olatunji-Bello expressed pride in the university’s ability to produce graduates who are well-prepared for the workforce and capable of making significant contributions on both national and global levels. The convocation event, set to take place in multiple segments, began with the press conference and will include a variety of activities, such as a Convocation Staff Sports Competition, a special Jumat service, and a Thanksgiving Service.
The official convocation events will start on April 7, 2025, with the traditional Coconut Breaking and Cultural Festival, followed by a lecture on Nigeria’s future by Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa. The week-long celebrations will conclude with the award of Doctorate Degrees and the conferment of distinguished professorships on April 10, 2025.
This year’s graduating class includes 971 diploma students and 8,711 first-degree graduates, with a notable 192 achieving first-class honours. Prof. Olatunji-Bello highlighted that Isioma Nwosu stood out with a remarkable CGPA of 4.93, earning her the title of the best-graduating student for the academic session.
In addition, the university will confer honorary doctorates on two distinguished Nigerians: Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, and Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, in recognition of their contributions to the university and the nation. Professor Joseph Abayomi Olagunju will also be elevated to the rank of Distinguished Professor.
Reflecting on her administration’s achievements, Prof. Olatunji-Bello highlighted the successful accreditation of 43 out of 44 courses presented to the National Universities Commission in 2023. LASU continues to excel, with its position as the top state university and leading institution in Sub-Saharan Africa, as noted in the 2024 UI Greenmetrics World University ranking.
