“Irresponsible and Stupid” — Alex Otti Rebukes Journalist Over Demand for Economic Impact Data

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State sharply criticised a journalist during his monthly media chat in Umuahia on Friday after being asked to provide verifiable data on the socio-economic impact of his administration’s policies.

The exchange occurred at the February edition of the governor’s regular engagement with journalists, which was broadcast live to residents across the state.

Chika Nwabueze of BON Media Group asked the governor to present measurable evidence, beyond visible infrastructure projects such as road rehabilitation, to show how policies introduced since May 2023 have improved economic conditions and living standards in Abia.

In response, Otti rejected the premise of the question and challenged the journalist to rely on his own observations as a resident of the state.

“Do you live in Abia? So if you live in Umuahia, you are the one that will provide data,” the governor said.

He described the forum as a platform for substantive engagement, adding that while questions are encouraged, they must be well-prepared and relevant. Otti said asking him to produce data on changes in a state where the journalist resides was “irresponsible”.

The governor also warned against what he termed frivolous contributions, stating that participants should approach the media session with seriousness.

Otti cited ongoing road rehabilitation, improvements in primary healthcare centres, changes in public transport, and aspects of free education as evidence of progress under his administration. He maintained that residents could directly observe these developments in their daily lives.
