“I Won’t Settle for VP Slot” – Amaechi
Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has ruled out any possibility of running as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2027 elections, affirming his ambition to contest for the presidency. Amaechi made his position clear following suggestions that he could join a joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
The speculation arose after Atiku’s ally, media entrepreneur Dele Momodu, hinted that Amaechi might step in as a running mate if 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi decided to run independently. Momodu praised Amaechi’s political influence, saying he had played a key role in mobilizing support for former President Buhari, even surpassing other major political figures.
Through his media aide, David Iyofor, Amaechi dismissed the notion of being anyone’s running mate. Iyofor emphasized that Amaechi is focused solely on the presidency and believes it is the turn of Southern Nigeria to produce the nation’s next leader. He warned that Amaechi’s name should not be included in any discussions about vice-presidential candidates.
Amaechi, who previously sought the All Progressives Congress presidential ticket in 2023, joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) earlier this year and is now pursuing the party’s nomination for the 2027 elections.
