Gunmen Kill 12 Miners, Abduct Three in Plateau State
At least 12 local miners have been killed, three abducted, and five others injured following an attack by gunmen in Fan community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday while the victims were engaged in what community leaders described as legitimate mining activities. The assailants reportedly stormed the mining site and opened fire without any provocation.
Confirming the attack in a phone interview, the National President of the Berom Youth Moulder Association, Barrister Solomon Dalyop, said the miners were conducting lawful business when they were attacked. He stated that 12 people were killed on the spot, three were taken away by the attackers, and five others sustained injuries.
Dalyop condemned the attack, describing it as a tragic reminder of the ongoing insecurity facing communities in Plateau State, particularly those pursuing legitimate economic livelihoods.
The injured victims have been taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while efforts are ongoing by the community and relevant authorities to locate and rescue those abducted.
