Grieving Nigerian Woman Renounces South African After Husband’s Death, Gives Reasons
The wife of a Nigerian man recently killed in Pretoria has publicly renounced her South African citizenship, expressing outrage over the treatment of Africans in the country and calling on the Nigerian government to intervene.
In an emotional interview posted by News Central on Tuesday, the grieving woman declared that she no longer wished to be identified as South African. “From now on I won’t be a South African; I’m ashamed to call myself a South African. I am a Nigerian; call me names; I don’t care,” she said. “All I’m asking is that the Nigerian government stand and fight for our people.”
She revealed that her two sons with the deceased are now afraid to attend school, quoting her 13-year-old: “Is it a crime to be Nigerian? Why did they have to kill my father? What kind of country is this?”
The woman also alleged that her husband’s suspected killer remains free, accusing South African authorities of complacency. She appealed directly to the Nigerian high commission to act swiftly, vowing to pursue justice until those responsible are held accountable.
The late Nigerian man reportedly died in an apparent retaliatory attack in Pretoria. As of the time of reporting, attempts to reach the Nigerian high commission for comment were unsuccessful.
