Fuel Scarcity Looms as New Regulation Takes Effect
Concerns over potential fuel scarcity have intensified as the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) begins enforcing a new regulation banning 60,000-litre fuel tankers from operating on Nigerian roads.
The ban, which takes effect today, is part of measures aimed at addressing safety concerns related to tanker accidents. Additionally, the NMDPRA has announced that by the fourth quarter of 2025, no truck exceeding 45,000 litres in capacity will be allowed to load petroleum products.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) warning that investments worth over N300 billion in the affected trucks could be lost. While some stakeholders fear the ban will lead to fuel shortages, others argue that it will instead drive up petroleum prices due to increased transportation costs.
