Follow-Up: Victim of Teacher’s Beating in Anambra Dies, Commissioner Confirms
Tragic news has emerged from Anambra State as the eight-year-old pupil who was allegedly beaten into a coma by a teacher has died. This update was confirmed by Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the state commissioner for education, earlier today.
Faith Nwonye, the teacher at the now-closed Landmark School in Mgbakwu, Awka North LGA, had been arrested for the brutal incident that occurred over the weekend. Despite receiving intensive medical care, the child succumbed to the severe injuries sustained from the beating.
“The child, unfortunately, passed away early this morning,” Chuma-Udeh announced solemnly. “This is a devastating outcome and highlights the critical need for stringent measures to protect our children in educational institutions.”
Chuma-Udeh reiterated that the school was operating illegally and had been shut down indefinitely following the incident. She assured that the state government is committed to ensuring justice for the victim. “The investigation is ongoing, and we are determined to see that those responsible are held accountable,” she stated.
The commissioner also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, promising that the government will support them during this difficult time. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. We will do everything in our power to support them and to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.”
Faith Nwonye remains in police custody and faces serious charges, including potential manslaughter. The state government has vowed to implement stricter regulations to prevent the operation of illegal schools and to protect children from abuse.
