FG Unveils Three New National Identity Cards to Serve Citizens
The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed plans to introduce three new national identity cards, aimed at serving approximately 104 million citizens across the nation. This announcement comes from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), outlining the diverse functionalities of the forthcoming cards.
According to Ayodele Babalola, the Technical Adviser for Media and Communications to the Director-General of NIMC, the new cards comprise a bank-enabled National ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.
Babalola explained, “The bank-enabled National ID is designed to cater to the needs of the middle and upper segments, particularly those who frequently utilize banking services, and is expected to be available within the next one or two months after its launch.” Additionally, he highlighted the activation timeline for the National Safety Net Card, which aims to swiftly address authentication needs and provide a secure platform for government services such as distributing palliatives to the 25 million vulnerable Nigerians supported by existing government intervention programs.
For individuals preferring digital formats, digital/virtual versions of all cards will be made accessible, albeit with limited functionalities. Moreover, the issuance of ECOWAS cards will be undertaken in collaboration with the Nigerian Immigration Service, ensuring issuance on an as-needed basis.
Babalola emphasized the implementation strategy, stating, “We shall be implementing the following programs to revive the general multipurpose card issuance: first, the bank-enabled national ID card in collaboration with NIBSS and banks, followed by a social intervention card under the National Safety Net Card. The third rollout will be an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.”
While targeting a possible launch in May, Babalola underscored that the timeline is contingent upon presidential approval and the finalization of crucial details. He affirmed that the project will be facilitated by AfriGo, under the Central Bank, with ultimate oversight resting with the President.
