FG to Build Affordable Bamboo Smart Homes for Low and Medium-Income Earners

The Federal Government has announced plans to construct affordable smart homes using only bamboo as the primary building material for low- and medium-income earners across the country. The initiative aims to provide a sustainable and cost-effective housing solution while addressing environmental concerns.

This was disclosed on Wednesday, June 11, in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye. Represented by the Director of Environmental Science Technology, Mrs. Benadette Oguche, she made the statement during a one-day capacity building workshop on the relevance of bamboo for climate-smart housing construction.

Mrs. Esuabana highlighted that bamboo, combined with other proven technologies, offers a scalable solution to Nigeria’s housing deficit, particularly for a rapidly growing population. She emphasized that the use of bamboo not only supports eco-friendly construction but also ensures that new homes meet standards of adaptability, comfort, and affordability.

She also noted that the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), a parastatal under the ministry, is spearheading the adoption of green technologies for housing development. As part of this initiative, NBRRI is focusing on bamboo-based construction to reduce the carbon footprint of housing projects.

Acknowledging existing challenges such as high initial costs and the unstable supply of raw materials, the Permanent Secretary expressed confidence that insights from the workshop would help tackle these issues. The government’s plan, she affirmed, reinforces its commitment to sustainable development while improving access to decent housing for Nigerians in need.
