FG Debunks Reports of COVID-19 Variant XEC Detection in Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has dismissed reports suggesting the detection of the COVID-19 variant XEC in Nigeria. In a statement released on Saturday by the ministry’s deputy director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Alaba Balogun, authorities confirmed there is no evidence to support such claims.

The variant, known for its heightened virulence, was first reported in Australia and has since spread to 29 countries, sparking global concerns over its impact on healthcare systems. Despite these developments, the ministry assured Nigerians that robust surveillance at the nation’s entry points and healthcare facilities has shown no trace of the variant in the country.

To bolster preparedness against potential outbreaks, the federal government has upgraded its Federal Tertiary Hospitals by establishing molecular laboratories, isolation centers, and intensive care units equipped with ventilators. These measures are part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.

The ministry also addressed misinformation circulating on social media, including a letter dated December 5, 2024, claiming the variant had been detected. It urged Nigerians to disregard such reports and rely only on verified updates from official sources.

Nigerians were encouraged to continue adhering to universal precautions, such as regular handwashing and maintaining good personal hygiene, to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of healthcare services across the nation.
