Fatal Truck Crash in Nnewi Leaves Multiple Dead, Including Children
A devastating auto crash in Nnewi has left no fewer than ten people, including children, feared dead. The fatal accident occurred late Friday along the Ugwu-Akpati Ozu axis of the Nnewi-Okigwe Road, near the Nnewi Area Command Bus Stop.
Eyewitness reports indicate that a truck, fully loaded with cement, suffered brake failure, causing the driver to lose control. The out-of-control vehicle plowed through multiple cars, motorcycles, and roadside shops before crashing into a residential building, trapping several victims beneath its weight.
Residents at the scene described a harrowing moment of chaos and despair as they scrambled to rescue those caught in the wreckage. “It was a terrifying sight. The truck lost control, cleared several structures, and rammed into a house, killing at least five children from the same family,” one witness recounted.
The driver of the ill-fated truck also perished in the crash, which reportedly occurred while many families were gathered in their compounds. The tragic accident cast a pall over the community, particularly as it happened on Valentine’s Day, a time meant for celebration.
Another witness, detailing the extent of the devastation, said, “A 40-foot trailer carrying cement lost control at Ugwu-Akpati Ozu, sweeping bikers and vehicles along its path before slamming into makeshift shops and a residential compound.”
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the incident and assured that further details would be provided following an official investigation.
