EBSU Student Commits Suicide After Failing One Course

A final-year student at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) in Abakaliki, identified as Favour Ugwuka, has reportedly taken her own life. Sources indicate that Favour, an English Department student, ended her life in her hostel at the Ishieke Campus after failing a particular course multiple times.

Investigations revealed that despite passing all her other courses, Favour struggled with one specific course, allegedly due to the actions of the course’s lecturer, who had purportedly vowed she would never pass.

A video circulating online shows a woman believed to be Favour’s mother, who directly blamed the lecturer for her daughter’s death. In the video, she laments, “Dr. Enyi said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide.”

Rex Nwome, a former classmate of Favour, corroborated this account, stating that the lecturer had prevented her from graduating. “Favour was my classmate and a best friend to me in the English Department. The lecturer vowed never to allow Favour to graduate. Despite her efforts, she failed his course repeatedly and had to pay for an additional year’s tuition fee to retake it. When her name was missing from the latest NYSC shortlist, it led to intense depression,” Nwome explained.

He added that Favour’s desperation to graduate and serve her country led to severe emotional distress, ultimately resulting in her suicide.

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the incident on Thursday. DSP Joshua Ukandu, the Command’s spokesperson, said, “Yes, the Command received the report of suicide by a female student.”

When contacted, the accused lecturer, Dr. Enyi C. Enyi of the Department of English, denied any responsibility for Favour’s death.
