Crisis Hits Adamawa Labour Party: Local Government Chairmen Oust State Chairman

The Labour Party (LP) in Adamawa State finds itself embroiled in turmoil as the local government chairmen unanimously vote to remove Christopher Nicholas, the state chairman of the party.

Eighteen out of the 21 local government chairmen convened in Yola, the state capital, to execute the ousting of Nicholas and the entire state executive committee, citing allegations of incompetence.

Led by Rev Iliya Mathias, who doubles as the chairman of the LP Association of Local Government of Nigeria and the party chairman in Hong Local Government Area, the chairmen accused Nicholas of ineptitude in steering the party’s affairs.

In a Vote of No Confidence delivered to the press by the Adamawa LP ALGON chairman, the chairmen accused Nicholas of engaging in anti-party activities, alleging his affiliation as the state chairman of both the Labour Party and Accord Party.

Furthermore, they criticized Nicholas for mismanagement of party resources and strained relations with key party stakeholders, leading to a deterioration in party performance during the 2023 governorship election in the state.

Expressing their readiness to abide by the decision of the LP National Working Committee, the Adamawa LG chairmen announced the formation of a seven-member state caretaker committee.

The newly appointed caretaker chairman, Hon Theman Jonah, will be supported by Apwanokona Azmaveth as secretary, Aliyu Mohammed Abubakar as treasurer, Henry Kwataden as PRO, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed as woman leader, Kamalludeen Aliyu as youth leader, and Auwal Chiroma as a member.

Reacting to the ousting, Apostle Ezra Kwaya, a member of Nicholas’ executive committee, expressed surprise, highlighting that no formal complaints had been raised by the local government chairmen against Nicholas or any other member of the state exco.
