“Contest Again in 2027,” APC South-South Region Begs President Tinubu
The All Progressive Party (APC) in the South-South region has called on President Bola Tinubu to seek re-election in the 2027 presidential race. This appeal was made in a communiqué signed by the APC Congress South-South Zonal Executive after their meeting in Calabar, Cross River State, on Sunday.
The communiqué commended President Tinubu for his dedication to various policies and projects, particularly highlighting his commitment to the coastal road project. The party praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, asserting that they are aimed at repositioning the nation.
The committee reaffirmed its unwavering support for Tinubu’s administration, appreciating his efforts in good governance, economic reforms, national security, and infrastructural development. Despite the challenges posed by rising inflation following the end of petrol subsidies announced on May 29, 2023, the APC South-South remains confident in Tinubu’s policies. Nigeria’s headline inflation surged to 33.95% in May 2024, up from 22.41% in May 2023, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Food inflation also spiked to 40.66% year-on-year in May 2024.
Amid criticism from the World Bank over the Central Bank of Nigeria’s money-tightening policies, and ongoing negotiations with the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress over a new minimum wage, the committee continues to support Tinubu’s reform agenda. The APC South-South commended the President’s commitment to the coastal road project and the construction progress on both ends.
To foster unity and strengthen the party’s presence in the region, the committee announced the establishment of a reconciliation committee, headed by Senator Bassey Otu, the Coordinator of the South-South geo-political zone. The move aims to bridge gaps, encourage collaboration, and enhance the party’s influence, particularly in the upcoming Edo State elections.
The communiqué also emphasized the importance of the e-registration program to increase party inclusivity and participation. A vote of confidence was passed on Senate President Godswill Akpabio, recognized as the APC leader in the zone, along with Victor Giadom and other zonal executive members.
The meeting concluded with a call to action, urging all party members to engage actively in rebuilding and strengthening the APC in the South-South region.
