Coastal Road Controversy: “I’m an ‘A’ Student, Your Senior in Engineering and Governance” — Minister Umahi Replies Gov. Makinde
The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, has responded to comments made by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, regarding the cost of federal road projects, particularly the ongoing coastal road initiative.
Governor Makinde had, during an appearance on Arise TV on Thursday, criticized the Minister for not providing clear details on the costing of the projects.
Reacting on Saturday, October 11, while inspecting the Abuja–Mararaba–Keffi Road alongside Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, Umahi expressed disappointment at Makinde’s remarks. He stated that while he respects state governors, he would not ignore what he described as an “insult” from a junior colleague.
Umahi explained that project costs are determined by several technical factors, including the type of materials used and the specific design requirements of each section. According to him, the Abuja–Keffi project was initially 43 kilometres but was extended to 45 kilometres to utilize the N73 billion approved by the previous administration.
He added that dividing the total amount by the project length only gives an estimated cost, not a definitive one, as the final figure depends on the actual scope of work completed and unused contingencies.
The Minister dismissed Makinde’s criticisms as “mischievous,” urging him to seek clarification on technical matters before making public comments. Umahi also noted that while Makinde is an engineer by training, his field of electrical and electronics engineering differs from civil engineering, which covers road construction.
He maintained that his explanations on project costing were accurate and based on sound engineering principles, stressing that there is no ambiguity in how costs per kilometre are determined.
Umahi reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to transparency and professionalism in the execution of federal road projects and encouraged critics to rely on facts rather than speculation.
