Church of England Names Sarah Mullally as First Female Archbishop of Canterbury
Sarah Mullally, the bishop of London, has been appointed as the first female archbishop of Canterbury, marking a historic moment for the Church of England. The announcement was made on Friday, confirming Mullally as the 106th person to hold the role and the first woman to lead the Anglican Communion worldwide.
Her appointment follows the sudden resignation of her predecessor, Justin Welby, in November last year. At 63, Mullally brings both pastoral and professional experience to the position. Before her ordination, she worked as a cancer nurse and later became a prominent advocate for women’s leadership in the church.
Since 2018, she has served as bishop of London, another groundbreaking role as the first woman to hold the post. Now, as archbishop of Canterbury, she will lead the spiritual life of the Church of England and oversee the global Anglican Communion of more than 85 million members.
