At least six people have been killed in a suspected gang-related attack around the Post Office area in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, in an incident that has heightened tension in the neighbourhood.
The attack reportedly occurred on Sunday night at about 8 p.m. Residents said armed individuals stormed the area and opened fire, leaving multiple casualties before fleeing the scene.
By Monday morning, security operatives had taken over the location, with police patrol vehicles stationed around the busy corridor. Several shops remained closed as business activities were disrupted by the incident.
A resident, who gave his name as Abdul, said the attackers targeted individuals in the area and left after issuing threats.
“They came with guns and other weapons and carried out the attack. Six people were killed, including the head of lotto operators around the Post Office area,” he said.
He also claimed the attackers warned they could return, adding that the area has experienced repeated violent incidents in recent times.
“This is the fourth deadly incident in this area recently. Authorities should address the activities going on here,” he added.
Some residents alleged the violence may be linked to rivalry between suspected confraternities, though this has not been independently confirmed.
There are also conflicting accounts on the number of casualties, with some locals suggesting the death toll may be higher than six.
The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, confirmed the incident when contacted, saying officers were still on ground at the scene and that further details would be released after ongoing assessments.
