A student of Lagos State University (LASU), Otabor Joseph, has died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.
Joseph, with matriculation number 240341269, was a student in the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts.
The attack occurred off campus on Friday, 29 May 2026, when he and some friends were reportedly confronted by armed robbers. He was taken to hospital for treatment but died on Tuesday, 2 June 2026.
In a statement released on Thursday, 4 June, the university confirmed his death through the Acting Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi Jeariogbe. LASU said the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, extended condolences to the bereaved family and the university community.
The institution said it was informed shortly after the incident and immediately activated its response structure through the Dean of Students’ Affairs, maintaining communication with medical officials at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where Joseph was admitted.
According to the statement, the university also engaged the student’s family, hospital authorities, and security agencies following his death, and is cooperating with police investigators as inquiries continue into the circumstances of the attack.
LASU added that arrangements for communication with relevant stakeholders have been sustained since the incident and reiterated its support for the family.
The university described Joseph as a member of its student community and expressed sympathy to those affected by his death.
