The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has announced Sunday, June 14, 2026, as a day of mourning for victims of violent attacks across the country.

The decision was reached at the end of the group’s National Church Denominational Leadership Summit 2026. CAN said the day will be observed as “Black Sunday,” with nationwide prayers scheduled from June 12 to June 14.

Speaking at the summit, the President of Christian Association of Nigeria, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said prayer alone is insufficient to address the country’s worsening security situation. He stressed the need for concrete government action to curb ongoing attacks and kidnappings.

Okoh called on authorities to declare a state of emergency on insecurity, arguing that stronger intervention is needed to halt the trend of violence. He also urged the federal government to fast-track the establishment of state police and decentralise the security structure to improve response times and effectiveness.

He further demanded the unconditional release of all kidnapped victims and insisted that perpetrators must face justice.
