The chairman of the Accord Party in Osun State, Asimiyu Ajibola, is receiving treatment at the University of Osun Teaching Hospital after he was shot by unidentified gunmen in Osogbo on Wednesday night.
Police authorities confirmed the incident on Thursday, saying the attack is being treated as a suspected assassination attempt.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abiodun Ojelabi, the shooting happened around 11:50 p.m. in the MDS area. Two armed men, who arrived on a motorcycle, reportedly opened fire on Ajibola before fleeing the scene.
Security operatives were deployed immediately after a distress call was received. Officers evacuated the victim to a medical facility, where he is currently stable and responding to treatment, according to medical personnel.
The police said investigations have begun, with tactical and intelligence units assigned to track down those responsible. Items recovered at the scene have been sent for forensic examination.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, ordered a full-scale investigation and directed all relevant units to intensify efforts to identify and arrest the suspects.
Authorities also urged residents to remain calm and share any useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The attack adds to a series of recent security incidents reported across parts of the South-West. On Wednesday in Ibadan, gunmen abducted a relative of a former power minister along with her twin children, while earlier in the week, armed men raided a Nigeria Immigration Service passport office in Ogbomoso, escaping with a rifle and other items.
