A group of 81 minority members of the House of Representatives has elected Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere as the new Minority Leader, following the resignation of Kingsley Chinda from the position.
A letter signed by the lawmakers and addressed to Speaker Tajudeen Abbas formally communicated Ugochinyere’s nomination. The lawmakers said the decision became necessary after Chinda left the opposition caucus following his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In the letter, the lawmakers nominated Ugochinyere, who represents Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, to succeed Chinda as leader of the minority bloc in the House.
The signatories comprise members from several opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), African People’s Movement (APM), Accord, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The Speaker is expected to present the nomination to the House and formally announce Ugochinyere’s appointment at a forthcoming plenary session.
Before his election to the House of Representatives, Ugochinyere served as a senior adviser to the President of the Senate. Since joining the Green Chamber, he has sponsored and moved more than 30 bills, motions and petitions.
Chinda stepped down as Minority Leader after joining the APC, creating a vacancy in the leadership of the opposition caucus.
