APC urges INEC to Deregister ADC, cites need to reduce ballot paper congestion

 

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arguing that Nigeria’s ballot papers should not include what it described as non-viable political parties.

 

The party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru, made the call on Friday during an interview on Arise Television.

 

Basiru said the current number of registered political parties in Nigeria, about 19, includes groups that have not demonstrated sufficient electoral strength to justify continued registration.

 

“We’re calling on INEC to deregister the ADC. We don’t want the ballot papers to be clustered with unviable political parties,” he said.

 

He added that the APC’s position is grounded in existing electoral laws and performance thresholds required for political parties.

 

Basiru also referenced ongoing court matters relating to party registration criteria, insisting that regulatory enforcement should guide INEC’s actions. He further described some smaller parties as lacking meaningful political impact.
