Another Nigerian Student Dies in the UK

A Nigerian postgraduate student in the United Kingdom, Hammed, has died after a sudden decline in his health linked to advanced cancer. The 36-year-old, from Lagos with roots in Ayete, Oyo State, had travelled to the UK in September last year to begin a Master’s programme in Business and Management at the University of Plymouth.

News of his death emerged through a GoFundMe appeal launched by Mariam Ajibola and Mohammed Chaanda on behalf of Piety Mosque. The fundraiser, initially set up to support his medical treatment, was later updated to seek assistance for his burial. According to the organisers, Hammed battled cancer while continuing his studies and was determined to finish despite the emotional and physical strain.

They described him as the youngest of four children, a cheerful and friendly figure known for his warmth and generosity. His health, however, deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks. Plans to fly him back to Nigeria so he could spend his final days with family were cancelled after doctors ruled he was too ill to travel. With repatriation of his body no longer possible, the organisers appealed for help to ensure he receives a dignified burial in the UK.

The fundraiser indicated that about £5,000 was required to secure a burial plot and coffin, but donations surpassed £6,000 before the campaign was paused on Sunday. Hammed’s passing follows the recent death of another Nigerian in the UK, Chiowa Obeigbe, whose body was discovered in his Gloucester apartment several days after he was believed to have died.
