Amanda Azubuike Becomes First Nigerian Woman Promoted to Brigadier General in U.S. Army
Amanda Azubuike, a Nigerian-American officer with more than 30 years of service, has made history as the first Nigerian woman promoted to Brigadier General in the United States Army.
Born in London to a Nigerian father and a Zimbabwean mother, Azubuike moved to the United States as a child. She began her military career in 1994 as an aviator, completing flight school in 1995 and qualifying as a UH-1 helicopter pilot.
Over the years, she has held a range of strategic and operational positions, including platoon leader in Georgia, operations officer in South Korea, and senior roles in public affairs and military intelligence.
Her notable assignments include serving as Chief of Public Affairs for U.S. Southern Command, Senior Military Advisor at the Pentagon, and Deputy Commanding Officer at the U.S. Army Cadet Command.
Azubuike’s promotion represents a historic milestone for the U.S. military and serves as an inspiration for women and Nigerians in the diaspora. It also highlights the increasing diversity in military leadership while celebrating Nigerian talent on the global stage.
