Airspace Violation: Why we Diverted Aircraft to Burkina Faso — NAF Clarifies

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has clarified reports that one of its aircraft was forced to land in Burkina Faso, explaining that the diversion was a precautionary measure prompted by a technical issue. The incident involved a C-130 aircraft on a ferry mission to Portugal, which took off from Lagos on 8 December 2025. Shortly after departure, the crew identified a technical concern that required an immediate landing.

The aircraft was redirected to Bobo-Dioulasso, the nearest airfield, in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols. The NAF confirmed that all personnel aboard the aircraft, including 11 soldiers, are safe and receiving appropriate support from Burkinabe authorities.

Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, emphasized that the diversion was a routine safety measure and not a breach of operational discipline. He noted that the mission would resume as planned once the aircraft is cleared for flight.

The clarification comes after earlier reports by Burkina Faso authorities suggesting that the aircraft had violated national airspace. The Burkinabe government confirmed the aircraft’s landing through the state-run Agence d’Information du Burkina.

In its statement, the Nigerian Air Force thanked the Burkinabe authorities for their cooperation and reaffirmed its commitment to strict compliance with operational and safety standards. Ejodame stressed that the NAF prioritizes the safety of its personnel while fulfilling its constitutional duties, ensuring that all missions are conducted under internationally recognized aviation procedures.
