The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence in the ability of the Supreme Court to rectify the errors they believe were present in the judgment delivered by the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal. This announcement was made during a meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, where a communique was issued.
Adolphus Wabara, a former Senate President and the Chairman of the PDP BoT, read the communique, emphasizing the party’s stance. Last week, the five-member Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal dismissed various petitions filed by the PDP and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 election.
The tribunal, led by Haruna Tsammani, delivered a unanimous decision, citing Abubakar’s inability to substantiate claims of vote rigging and irregularities in the election. However, in defiance of this ruling, the PDP and Abubakar promptly declared their intention to appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court.
According to the issued communique, the PDP BoT conveyed their unwavering belief in the Supreme Court’s capacity and courage to rectify what they perceive as “manifest errors” within the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal judgment. They stressed that this correction is vital for the unity, stability, and corporate existence of Nigeria.
The PDP raised concerns about the current state of affairs in Nigeria, citing “excruciating hardship, worsening insecurity, and a general sense of apprehension and despondency” across the nation, which they attribute to the policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The communique also expressed concern about the rising level of poverty and frustration in the country due to what they view as the suppressive rule of the APC. The BoT warned that if not addressed urgently, this could escalate into a severe crisis.
The opposition party’s BoT declared that Nigeria is in a “precarious situation” under the APC’s governance, asserting that Nigerians look to the PDP for solutions and direction. The PDP BoT reiterated its determination to lead efforts to rescue the nation’s democracy and restore cohesion and economic prosperity.
