The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu has nullified the election victory of Prof. Sunday Nnamchi, a member of the Labour Party, and declared Hon. Prince Cornelius Nnaji of the People’s Democratic Party as the rightful winner for the Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency.
A three-man panel led by A. M. Abubakar delivered the verdict, upholding Prince Nnaji’s claim that Prof. Nnamchi was not duly sponsored and qualified to run for the House of Representatives seat in the election that took place on February 25, 2023.
Prince Nnaji, who had previously served as a one-term Federal lawmaker, filed the petition challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declaration of Prof. Nnamchi as the election winner on the grounds of his improper candidacy under the Labour Party.
In their judgment, the tribunal concurred with the petitioner, ruling that the Labour Party’s candidate was indeed ineligible to contest the election, thus making Prince Nnaji the legitimate victor.
The announcement of the tribunal’s decision has ignited widespread celebration across the 23 Wards of the Enugu East/Isi-Uzo Federal Constituency.
