There was pandemonium on Thursday at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in Garki, Abuja after unidentified gunmen stormed the Secretariat in apparent attempts to stop Councillors from suspending the Council Chairman, Mr. Abdullahi Adamu.
Trouble allegedly began when the councillors, who on January 21 began investigation into a petition submitted by a civil society organization, the Civil Society For Human Rights and Rehabilitation against the chairman. The Chairman and petitioner have appeared before the chambers for questioning on the petition. But the councillors at Thursday’s plenary announced the suspension of the Chairman for two weeks.
After the suspension was announced, the gunmen emerged and shot sporadically into the air, forcing workers and other visitors inside the secretariat to flee to safety. Motorists around the secretariat abandoned their vehicles and fled. Some unidentified persons invaded the council chambers and seized the mace, an incident which brought the day’s proceeding to an abrupt end.
The Petitioners has accused the chairman of corruption and abuse of office.
Adamu at a townhall meeting has dismissed the petition as a fabrication. He said he is ready for probe.
“It is important for the residents and people of the council to be kept abreast of the happenings in the council.
“It is also important for the people to be carried along; leaders must be accountable” he said.
“I am not deterred by my accusers. I want to tell you categorically that this issue is politically motivated and I am ready to stand before any institution for questioning.
“The issues raised by the petitioner do not have facts; they are simply fabricated and they contain a lot of inaccuracies,” he added.
