In a significant achievement, the Cross River State Police Command has uncovered and dismantled an illicit Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and gun manufacturing facility located in the Osomba community within Akampka Local Government Area of the state.
This covert operation, led by Commander Ogini Chukwuma of the Anti Cultism and Kidnapping Squad (Dragon Squad), was carried out on the orders of Commissioner of Police Gyogon Grimah. Lasting over four hours, the operation resulted in the discovery of remote-controlled IEDs, detonators, various explosive devices, numerous automatic weapons, dozens of locally crafted double-barrel firearms and pistols. Notably, nine suspects, including bomb makers, were apprehended.
According to an anonymous source from the village, many of the guns and weapons used by gangsters and criminals in the area originated from this facility. With its uncovering and the subsequent arrests, Osomba and its surroundings are expected to experience newfound peace, as those who profited from these illegal activities are either in police custody or have fled the community.
The spokesperson for the police command, Irene Ugbo, confirmed the successful operation, stating that nine individuals, including the notorious gangster and armed robbery suspect known as Orok Etim, alias GOWON, are now in custody. The raid resulted in the seizure of eight high-explosive devices measuring 90m, six devices measuring 60m, ten detonators, fifteen indicators, ten remote devices, and ten batteries used as power sources.
This development marks a significant victory for law enforcement in Cross River State, as they continue to combat criminal activities and enhance security in the region.
