Youths in Umuadara, Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State have arrested a suspect linked to the killing of a student of the College of Nursing, Obowo, identified as Wendy Achumba.

The arrest followed a community-led search after residents raised alarm over the incident. The operation was reportedly coordinated by the youth leader, Chidiebere Iweajunwa, after what locals described as a series of investigations within the area.

The suspect, identified as Onyema Okonkwo, was later seen in a viral video interview where he admitted involvement in the attack. In the footage, he claimed that he and another man entered the victim’s residence around 7 p.m. with the intention of forcing sexual activity.

“We wanted her to give us sex, she refused. We went to her house around 7 p.m. I had sex with her two times, Emmanuel had once,” he said in the video.

Okonkwo further alleged that the situation escalated after the assault, leading to her death.

“After that, I hit her with a stick. I didn’t know Emmanuel returned with a knife to kill her,” he added.

Community sources said the victim was living alone at the time of the incident, as her roommates had left for clinical training. The building, according to residents, is owned by a landlord based outside the country.

“The house had three students, but only one was around because others had gone for their nursing experience,” a resident said.

Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to police authorities for further investigation.

As of press time, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, Henry Okoye, had not issued an official statement on the arrest or ongoing investigation.
