Nigerian labour representative Domingo Michael Adeleke has died in Switzerland while attending the 114th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC).

Adeleke, who chaired the Lagos State Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), passed away on Tuesday in Geneva after a brief illness. He was part of Nigeria’s official delegation to the global meeting when he fell ill and was taken for medical care.

His death was confirmed by officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who said he had remained active in labour discussions up to the time of his illness.

In a statement, the NLC described Adeleke as a committed trade union leader who consistently worked on issues affecting workers’ welfare and labour rights in Nigeria.

He was also a member of the Nigeria Civil Service Union and played an active role in negotiations and advocacy involving public sector workers in Lagos State.

The NLC said Adeleke’s contributions extended beyond national engagements, noting his participation at the Geneva conference as part of efforts to represent Nigerian workers on the international stage.

Following his death, NLC officials visited the hospital where his body is being kept and began arrangements for its return to Nigeria.

The incident has affected Nigeria’s delegation at the ongoing conference, which brings together governments, employers and worker representatives to address global labour and employment issues.

Labour representatives in Nigeria and abroad have continued to react to the news, describing Adeleke’s death as a significant loss to the movement.

The NLC extended condolences to his family and colleagues, saying his work in labour advocacy would be remembered within the trade union community.
